Halloween Spooktacular Day 5

Danielle, thanks so much for inviting me to participate in the Halloween Spooktacular. I’m thrilled to be a part of such a fun event.

1.  I know you get asked this question over and over but can you tell us a little about yourself? Maybe something juicy. ;)

Sure- I’ve always thought tradesmen were sexy and it just so happened that for an entire week the fire alarm at work continued to have problems. Since the alarm was tied into the telephone system I had both the telephone company man and the fire alarm guy at the building, though never at the same time. The telephone man blamed the fire alarm company. The fire alarm guy showed me exactly what was happening and offered to come out to meet the telephone man. The telephone man called the fire alarm guy an idiot. Finally, after a week of dressing up and fixing my hair and makeup and trying my best to get the fire alarm guy’s attention, I asked him to go for a cup of coffee, our first date. And the next day the trouble on our fire alarm system cleared itself. I never saw the telephone man again and I married the fire alarm guy. I always say we were destined to be together.

2. When did you first start writing? Are you a full time author or do you do it on the side?
I began writing about three years ago. I’ve always had a creative side but was never able to figure out how to channel that energy. After spending eight weeks reading everything from Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles to Bram Stoker’s Dracula to Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse Novels to Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Series the idea to write my own story came to me. So I began writing Perpetual Light. Unfortunately, I write on the side and work a full time job during the day. Like most authors I’d love for that to change.

3. How long does it normally take you to write an average book?
Perpetual Light took me about a year and it’s looking like my current book is on the same path.

4. What do you think makes a story great?
Great characters. I think any story can work, if the characters are reliable and have depth. I’ve heard it said so many times that every story has been written. And I believe that. But it’s how the characters in the story manage the twists and turns that make it interesting.

5. Can you describe your book "
Perpetual Light" in one sentence?
Sure- A reincarnated woman must trust the husband she condemned three hundred and fifty years ago to help her defeat a power-hungry vampire hell-bent on ruling the world.

6. Have you done lots of research for your books or do the stories just come to you?
The basic stories just come to me. Then I research the details like clothing for the period or specific references, anything that will enhance the book and make the reader fall completely into the story without saying, “Hey, that’s not true.”
7. What are you currently working on?
I’m working on a paranormal about a little vampire named Eva Prim. She’s got a bit of a problem maintaining friendships due to the fact that she’s quick-tempered, opinionated, tender-hearted and a bit compulsive. She’s a hoot, though at times she drives me nuts! She’s on the web at www.evaprim.com where she doles out advice and tips and busts vampire myths.
8. Are you a big fan of Halloween?
So this may seem kind of funny coming from someone who loves vampires and werewolves (don’t tell Eva about the werewolves), but I’m not a huge fan of Halloween. I hate being scared. I watch scary movies during the day, not at night and sometimes I turn the volume off. Though I do watch vampire movies, even at night. Go figure! The one thing I love about Halloween is seeing the little kids come by in their costumes. I just love when they can barely get out the words “trick or treat.” Super-cute.

9. What is your fondest, most embarrassing or scariest Halloween memory?
My scariest memory is from a time when my parents took me and my sisters to a haunted house when we were kids. I was probably 7 or 8. A giant gorilla jumped out of the shadows and scared the life out of me. As you know I hate being scared so the rest of the evening was torture for me and my parents. I think I left fingerprint bruises on my dad.

Just for fun:

Hardback or Paperback? – Both plus my Kindle
Dog ears or Bookmarks? – Oh! Bookmarks, of course. I never even crack the binding on a book. A dog ear is as bad as ripping the page out!
YA novels or Adult novels?- Adult. I have to admit, I like a bit of sex in my stories.
Library or Bookstore? - Bookstore
Reading glasses or No glasses? – No glasses.
Snack while reading or No snacks?
Snacks- anything with chocolate, especially Blue Diamond Chocolate Almonds.

Beach or Mountain? The beach. Love the beach.
Vampire or Werewolf? - Vampire
Hot or Flirty? – Hot.
Movie 1st or Book 1st?   Book 1st. Sometimes I don’t even bother with the movie as I’ve been disappointed so many times.
Contemporary or Historical?  This is a tough one. I tend to like contemporaries. However, I’ve only recently started reading historicals and I really like them.
Page-Turner or Tear Jerker? Page turner, definitely.

Bio

After trying her hand at many, many things- from crafting and art classes to cooking and sewing classes to running her own handbag business, Jordan finally figured out how to channel her creativity. With an active imagination and a little encouragement from her husband she sat down and began to write, each night clicking away at the keys with her black Labrador, Dino curled up under the desk.

A few short years later she’s entered the publishing arena with no plans to ever turn back.

Hi Arianne. I do like Sookie Stackhouse. I was even impressed with True Blood from the first season. I recently realized that I'm really glad they've changed the story lines a bit for the show. It makes it so much more interesting. It's like a surprise every week. And it doesn't hurt that Eric, Bill, and Alcide are so hot! Jordan

Bon Jour! How exciting to have a reader from France. Thanks for stopping by. Now I can go tell my husband I'm internationally known! Not to worry. I'll keep my ego in check! Have a great day. Jordan

I haven't heard of this author. Going to her site & check out her books!!! Love discovering new authors!!! :-)

Hi Lexi.

I'm grinning like a goober about your comment. My husband and I still disagree on who asked who out first. He thinks that since he asked me for dinner and had told the girl in his office only to give calls from my building to him that he was the one who asked. But I'm think that if I hadn't asked for that cup of coffee we'd still have alarm problems and I'd still be dressing up to see him everyday waiting for him to ask! Jordan

I agree that characters are what makes a story great. They are what makes me want to get to know them more and keep reading.

Great interview. My question is what makes vampires more enticing than werewolves? I am a werewolf lover myself, so I'd like to know what makes a vampire more interesting to an author.

Hi DarkBloodyVamp, Anne and Carol L,

Great to hear from all of you. Thanks for stopping by to learn about me and hear about Perpetual Light. Jordan

Jordan K Rose said...

Hi Na,

It's rare that I just remember a scene or incident in a story. It's always the characters that I remember and then specific scenes and how the characters reacted or what happened to them. Then I imagine them in other situations and wonder what happens to them after the story ends. It's always all about the characters for me. Jordan

Jordan K Rose said...

Hi KainsHottie.

Your question is a great one. I do like both werewolves and vampires. I guess what sways me more in favor of vampires is that they are constant. A vampire is a vampire no matter how the moon is or how his emotions run. He doesn't change once he's become a vampire. Werewolves go back and forth. The other thing is that though I'm an animal lover and I do like my men to have hair on their chests, there is a limit to the amount of manscaping that one should require! ;) Jordan

I totally feel you on the gorrilla/haunted house incident. I was in a "maze" haunted house where they are constantly changing the walls and you have to find your way out and they have scary poeple in it and one of my friends told this freaky guy my name so he proceeded to chase me around saying my name I nearly peed my pants!
